INTRODUCTION

Well, May 21, 2011 is fast approaching, and Harold Camping’s words will soon be put to the test…will this be the day that Jesus returns, as he claims God has revealed to him?  And will the world experience a cataclysmic earthquake on that day, as he also claims God supposedly told him?  Will the world end in fiery destruction five months later, on October 21, 2011, as he also said God has shown him?  If not, (and I, and many others believe that will be the case) how many people’s lives will then lie in ruins, because of the many unwise choices they have made due to not testing his words against the Word of God?

Many of those who have accepted Harold Camping’s message as being from God, have quit their jobs and invested almost all of their money to spread this message around the world, in hopes of warning others of the supposed ‘Day Of Judgment’ that’s coming on that day.  But what happens on May 22nd, when they realize Harold Camping was wrong?  How will they be able to pay their bills if their employers will not have a heart of compassion and hire them back?  What if their friends mock and reject them, instead of looking on them with compassion?

It’s up to those of us who are Christians to gently and lovingly reason with people who have been led astray by false prophets and false teachers who do not adhere to sound doctrine, but instead ‘speak the delusions of their own minds.’ (Jeremiah 14:14)  We need to remind those who are Christians, and share with those who are not, that God’s Word declares,  “No man knows the day or the hour…” of His return.       (Matthew 24:36)

Many people are not aware of the fact that Harold Camping also predicted that Christ would return in September of 1994, and needless to say, Jesus did not return on that date.  God’s Word has many strong warnings about false prophets…here’s just one of them for now…”But a prophet who presumes to speak in My name anything I have not commanded him to say, or a prophet who speaks in the name of other gods, must be put to death.”  (Deuteronomy 18:20)

I would now like to take the focus off of Harold Camping, and place it on the many people whose lives will be changed forever after this day, May 21st, 2011 comes and goes, which is how the idea for this poem came about…I began to think about the countless number of people whose lives have been, will be, and are being devistated by people like Harold Camping, who have wrongly predicted the day of Christ’s return and the end of the world.

The Jehovah’s Witnesses strongly came to mind, because if ever there was a group of people who, in their desire to serve God, end up being controlled, manipulated, and deceived instead, it would be them.  They were and are told not to waste their time furthering their education by going to college, and told to *put off getting married and having children until after Armageddon (*WATCHTOWER , November 1, 1938, Page 323 [Note: 1 Timothy 4:3]  but instead they should invest their time in the organization…’after all Armageddon is right around the corner.’  And, as you will see from the information at the links below, there were many times that predictions were made for the return of Christ.  And when each day came and went, there was always an explanation given, and new dates for His return continued to be given as well.  At one point in 1914, the Jehovah’s Witnesses were told by the Watchtower Society that Jesus did return, but that He returned invisibly.  (*See link below)

But what does God’s Word say about false prophets…”But a prophet who presumes to speak in My name anything I have not commanded Him to say, or a prophet who speaks in the name of other gods, must be put to death.”  You may say to yourselves,  “How can we know when a message has not been spoken by the LORD?”  If what a prophet proclaims in the name of the LORD does not take place or comes true, that is a message the LORD has not spoken.  That prophet has spoken presumptuously.  Do not be afraid of him.”  (Deuteronomy 18:20-22)

When Jesus spoke to His disciples about His return in Matthew 24, known as the ‘Olivet Discourse,’ He repeatedly told them to “Keep watch, because you do not know what day your Lord will come,” (verse 42) and to “Be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect Him.”  (Verse 44)  Clearly Jesus’ words reveal to us that the actual day and time will not be known to us, even though Jesus does say we will know the signs to watch for…  the main one being deception…”As Jesus was sitting on th Mount of Olives, the disciples came to Him privately.  “Tell us,” they said,  “when will this happen, and what will be the sign of Your coming and of the end of the age?”  Jesus answered:  “Watch out than no one deceives you.  For many will come in My name, claiming, ‘I am the Christ,’ and will deceive many.  You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed.  Such things must happen, but the end is still to come.  Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom.  There will be famines and earthquakes in various places.  All these are the beginnings of birth pains… At that time many will turn away from the faith and will betray and hate each other and many false prophets will appear and deceive many people…” “At that time if anyone says to you,  ‘Look, here is the Christ!’ or,  ‘There He is!’  do not believe it.  For false Christs and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and miracles to deceive even the elect–if that were possible.  See I have told you ahead of time.  So if anyone tells you,  ‘There He is, out in the desert,’ do not go out; or, ‘Here He is in the inner rooms,’ do not believe it.  For as lightning that comes from the east is visible even in the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man.”  (Matthew 24:3-8,10,23-27)

More signs and warnings in God’s Word…”When you see Jerusalem being surrounded by armies, you will know that its desolation is near.  Then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains, let those in the city get out, and let those in the country not enter the city…Jerusalem will be trampled on by the Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.  “There will be signs in the sun, moon, and stars.  On the earth, nations will be in anguish and perplexity at the roaring and tossing of the sea.  Men will faint from terror, apprehensive of what is coming on the world, for the heavenly bodies will be shaken.  At that time they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory.  When these things begin to take place, stand up, and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.”  (Luke 21:20,21,25-28)

If we knew the day that Jesus was to return, some of us would probably be tempted to hold off our commitment to Christ until the time of His return came closer.  But by the following verses, Jesus makes it clear to us that if we are truly His, we will live for Him and be found to be faithful and obedient whenever the day and the moment of He return will be… “Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come.  But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what time of the night the thief was coming, he would have kept watch, and would not have let his house be broken into.  So you must also be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect Him.  “Who then is the faithful and wise servant, whom the master has put in charge of the servants in his household to give them their food in their proper time?  It will be good for that servant whose master finds him doing so when he returns.  I tell you the truth, he will put him in charge of all his possessions.  But suppose that servant is wicked and says to himself,  ‘My master is staying away a long time,’ and he then begins to beat his fellow servants and to eat and drink with drunkards.  The master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he is not aware of.  He will cut him to pieces and assign him a place with the hypocrites, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.”  (Matthew 24:42-51)

In closing, in my desire to see many Jehovah’s Witnesses come to the knowledge of God’s love and grace, and that Jesus Christ is God, I would like to share the following verses with any Jehovah’s Witnesses who may find themselves reading this.   Even though you may be told not to think independently, I pray that your love for Jehovah God will be stronger, and that you will  read these Scriptures, and allow God’s Word to speak to you…

“In the beginning You laid the foundations of the earth, and the heavens are the work of Your hands.”  (Psalm 102:25)

“In the past God spoke to our forefathers through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days He has spoken to us by His Son, whom He appointed heir of all things, and through whom He made the universe.  The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of His being, sustaining all things by His powerful word.  After He had provided purification for sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven.  So He became as much superior to the angels as the name He inherited is superior to theirs.  To which of the angels did God ever say,  “You are My Son; today I have become Your Father” ?  Or again, “I will be His Father and He will be My Son” ?  And again, when God brings His firstborn into the world, He says,  “Let all God’s angels worship Him.”  In speaking of the angels He says,  “He makes His angels winds, His servants flames of fire.”  But about the Son He says,  “Your throne, O God, will last forever and ever, and righteousness will be the scepter of Your kingdom.  You have loved righteousness and hated wickedness; therefore God, Your God, has set You above Your companions by anointing You with the oil of joy.  ”  He also says,  “In the beginning, O Lord, You laid the foundations of the earth, and the heavens are the work of Your hands.”  (Hebrews 1:1-10)

Jesus said…”You dilligently study the Scriptures because you think that by them you possess eternal life.  These are the Scriptures that testify about Me, yet you refuse to come to Me to have life.”  (John 5:39,40)

“Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.  Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.  For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”                 (Matthew 11:28-30)

“Now Thomas (called Didymus), one of the Twelve, was not with the disciples when Jesus came.  So the other disciples said,  ” We have seen the Lord!”  But he said to them,  “Unless I see the nail marks in His hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into His side, I will not believe it.”  A week later his disciples were in the house again, and Thomas was with them.  Though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said,  “Peace be with you!”  Then He said to Thomas,  “Put your finger here; see My hands.  Reach out your hand and put it into My side.  Stop doubting and believe.”  Thomas said to Him,  “My Lord and my God!”  (John 20:24-28)

“For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men.  It teaches us to say “No” to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in this present age, while we wait for the blessed hope–the glorious appearing of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ, who gave Himself for us to redeem us from all wickedness and to purify for Himself a people that are His very own, eager to do what is good.”  (Titus 2:11-14)

“Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you.  On Him God the Father has placed His seal of approval.”  Then they asked Him,  “What must we do to do the works God requires?”  Jesus answered,  “The work of God is this: to believe in the one He has sent.”                 (John 6:27-29)

“For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith–and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God–not by works, so that no one can boast.  For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”  (Ephesians 2:8-10)

“I am the Alpha and the Omega,”  says the Lord God,  “who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty.”  (Revelation 1:8)

“When I saw Him, I fell at His feet as though dead.  Then He placed His right hand on me and said:  “Do not be afraid.  I am the First and the Last.  I am the Living One; I was dead and behold I am alive for ever and ever!”  (Revelation 1:17,18)

GOD’S WORD CONCERNING FALSE PROPHETS, THE RETURN OF CHRIST,

AND TESTING THE WORDS OF MEN

Then the LORD said to me,  “The prophets are prophesying lies in My name.  I have not sent them or appointed them or spoken to them.  They are prophesying to you false visions, divinations, idolatries, and the delusions of their own minds.”     (Jeremiah 14:14)

“This is what the LORD Almighty says:  “Do not listen to what the prophets are prophesying to you; they fill you with false hopes.  They speak visions from their own minds, not from the mouth of the LORD.”  (Jeremiah 23:16)

“The visions of your prophets were false and worthless; they did not expose your sin to ward off your captivity.  The oracles they gave you were false and misleading.”  (Lamentations 2:14)

“Watch out for false prophets.  They come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves.”  (Matthew 7:15)

“…many false prophets will appear and deceive many people.  “For false Christs and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and miracles to deceive even the elect–if that were possible.”  (Matthew 24:11,24)

No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.”  (Matthew 24:36)

“In my former book, Theophilus, I wrote about all that Jesus began to do and to teach until the day He was taken up to heaven, after giving instructions through the Holy Spirit to the apostles He had chosen.  After His suffering, He showed Himself to these men and gave many convincing proofs that He was alive.  He appeared to them over a period of forty days and spoke about the kingdom of God.  On one occasion, while He was eating with them, He gave them this command:  “Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift My Father promised, which you have heard Me speak about.  For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.”  So when they met together, they asked Him,  “Lord, are You at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?”  He said to them,  “It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by His own authority.  But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be My witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”  After He said this He was taken up before their very eyes, and a cloud hid Him from their sight.  They were looking intently up into the sky as He was going, when suddenly two men dressed in white stood beside them.  “Men of Galilee,”  they said,  “why do you stand here looking into the sky?  This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen Him go into heaven.”  (Acts 1:1-11)

“Now brothers, about times and dates we do not need to write to you, for you know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night.  While people are saying,  “Peace and safety,” destruction will come on them suddenly, as labor pains on a pregnant woman, and they will not escape.  But you, brothers, are not in darkness so that this day should surprise you like a thief.  You are all sons of the light and sons of the day.  We do not belong to the night or to the darkness.  So then, let us not be like others, who are asleep, but let us be alert and self-controlled.  For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk, get drunk at night.  But since we belong to the day, let us be self-controlled, putting on faith and love as a breastplate, and the hope of salvation as a helmet.  For God did not appoint us to suffer wrath but to receive salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ.  He died for us so that, whether we are awake or asleep, we may live together with Him.  Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.”                                  (1 Thessalonians 5:1-11)

“For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine.  Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear.”  (2 Timothy 4:3)

“Now the Bereans were of more noble characher than the Thessalonians, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true.”  (Acts 17:11)

“Therefore , I declare to you today that I am innocent of the blood of all men.  For I have not hesitated to proclaim to you the whole will of God.  Keep watch over yourselves and all the flock of which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers.  Be shepherds of the church of God, which He bought with His own blood.  I know that after I leave, savage wolves will come in among you and will not spare the flock.  Even from among your own number men will arise and distort the truth in order to draw away disciples after them.  So be on your guard!  Remember for three years I never stopped warning each of you night and day with tears.”  (Acts 20:26-31)

“Test everything.  Hold on to the good.  Avoid every kind of evil.”                              (1 Thessalonians 5:21,22)

“You must teach what is in accord with sound doctrine.”  (Titus 2:1)

“But there were also false prophets among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you.  They will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the Sovereign Lord who bought them–bringing swift destruction on themselves.”        (2 Peter 2:1)

“Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world.”  (1 John 4:1)

Harold Camping says,  ‘Jesus did return on May 21st, but that it was a spiritual coming,’ (Click on the article below)…Sadly, this is similar to what the Watchtower told the Jehovah’s Witnesses in 1914, when Jesus did not return as they claimed He would.

THE END IS NEARAGAIN

Many say ‘The end is near’ and even claim to know the date,

People then react in fear, quit their jobs, and some call on Jesus, before it is too late,

But this day will soon come and go, and everything will remain the same,

The world will go on for a little longer, while more people are crushed and left in pain,

Some will turn from God, because their intentions weren’t genuine from the start,

If only they knew God’s Word warns of false prophets, they wouldn’t be left with bitter

 and broken hearts,

It’s up to us to warn them, it’s up to us to show we care,

We need to tell them that no man knows the day or hour, so they are then aware,

That God’s Word tells us to always test the words and ways of men,

The end has been predicted many times before, and it will happen time and time

 again,

We all need to look to God, not man, the truth in His Word by His Spirit we will be

 shown,

Watching and ready, so whenever the day of Christ’s return, we will be found living for

 Him and Him alone.
