SERIES INTRODUCTION

There are two very important reasons why I felt compelled to write this series of posts, and I’d like to briefly share these reasons with you now before I go any further:

1) Since I am a former Catholic who is very aware of the teachings of the Catholic Church because I attended twelve years of Catholic school, attended Catechism classes, made my First Holy Communion, was Confirmed, and faithfully attended Mass not only every Sunday for many years, but also before school began for three years (as required by the school that I attended at the time), and who came to the knowledge of who Jesus Christ truly is and what He actually accomplished for us by reading a Catholic New Testament Bible exactly like the one pictured above, I decided to write this series with the hope of reaching precious Catholics so that they can not only come to an understanding of who Jesus Christ truly is as His Word, the Bible, declares Him to be, but also so they can see by reading God’s Word that they can have complete forgiveness, lasting joy, true peace, and the assurance of salvation if they choose to believe God’s Word and place their trust in Jesus Christ alone for their salvation. Also, since many Catholics do not realize everything that the Catholic church actually teaches (as I once did not realize until after doing research and reading the CCC), I thought that it was extremely important to share this information to make Catholics aware of many things that are quite disturbing, as you will all soon become aware of as this series continues.

2) This series of posts is also being written with the intention of helping those of you who are born-again, Bible believing followers of Jesus Christ who have no idea of what the teachings of Catholicism are so that you can become aware of their teachings and be prepared to offer hope and assurance of salvation through Jesus Christ to Catholics based solely upon the truth that is recorded in God’s Word.

As we continue on in this series together comparing Scriptures in the Catholic New Testament to teachings found in the Catechism of the Catholic Church, we must keep these important thoughts in mind:

When it comes to our eternal destination — heaven or hell — we must be certain that we place our trust in solid truth and not in speculation or in the traditions of men. The Catholic church claims to be the “one true Church.” Therefore, it stands to reason that their teachings must line up with God’s Word and not contradict it since God does not change (Malachi 3:6, James 1:17, Hebrews 13:8), and His Word stands firm forever. (Psalm 119:89, Isaiah 40:8, 1 Peter 1:24,25) If a contradiction is found it must be rejected because God’s Word is our plumb line by which we must measure (or test) the teachings of every religion to see if it lines up or not. If it is off in one point we can be certain that it will lead us further and further away from Biblical truth and lead us into spiritual deception.

This series will cover many different subjects ranging from what does the Catholic Church teach about the Bible, Jesus Christ, the Virgin Mary, priests, the pope, sin, forgiveness of sins, salvation, prayer, and what must a Catholic believe in order to receive eternal life. Some of these teachings will shock even many Catholics when they learn what their church actually teaches!

Lord willing, I hope to share at least one post every month with you in this new series until I have covered all the most important teachings that need to be brought to your attention. The main goal that I have in writing this series is to present the Word of God to Catholics — and to every person — in order to point everyone to Jesus Christ, who is our only hope and ‘the only name under heaven given among men by which we can be saved.’ (Acts 4:12)

Dear Catholic, please take a minute now to sincerely pray; ask God to open your mind to the Scriptures and to reveal the truth to you –whatever that may be.

Because only God can reveal the truth to you, I will refrain from making any comments unless I find it completely necessary. Since God’s Word is truth I trust that He will not only give you eyes to see the truth, but also I trust that He will give you the courage to respond to His leading. However, each one of you will find yourself having to answer this question when you come to many points that I present to you in these posts after realizing that there are oftentimes extreme differences between what the Word of God says and what Catholicism teaches, and the question that you will have to answer is:

“Are you going to believe the Word of God, or the word of man?”

For those of you who are not Catholic, and are taking the time to read these posts in order to learn what Catholicism actually teaches, please keep in mind that every time you see the word “church” spelled with a capital c they are referring to the Catholic church, since they believe that the “Catholic Church” alone is the “one true Church.”All of the information that I will be sharing with you I have obtained from the following sources:

3) Occasionally when I share a Scripture with you from the Sacred Heart League (SHL) Catholic New Testament and notice that it lacks depth and clarity, I will then follow it with the same verse but in the King James Version in order to give you a better understanding of what is being said, and so that you can see what is missing from the SHL translation.

4) Very briefly in this series, I will also be quoting from THE CATHOLIC DOUAY RHEIMS VERSION OF THE BIBLE – in which you will find the following statements:

“EXCERPT FROM ENCYCLICAL LETTER OF OUR HOLY FATHER BY DIVINE PROVIDENCE POPE LEO XIII ON THE STUDY OF HOLY SCRIPTURE:

“The God of all Providence, Who in the adorable designs of His love at first elevated the human race to the participation of the Divine nature, and afterwards delivered it from the universal guilt and ruin, restoring it to its primitive dignity, has in consequence bestowed upon man a splendid gift and safeguard–making known to him, by supernatural means, the hidden Mysteries of His divinity, His wisdom, and His mercy. For although in Divine revelations there are contained some things which are not beyond the reach of unassisted reason, and which are made the objects of such revelation in order “that all may come to know them with facility, certainty, and safety from error, yet not on this account can supernatural Revelation be said to be absolutely necessary; it is only necessary because God has ordained man to a supernatural end.” This supernatural revelation according to the belief of the universal Church, is contained both in unwritten Tradition, and in written Books, which are therefore called sacred and canonical because, “being written under the inspiration of the Holy Ghost, they have God for their author, and as such have been delivered to the Church.” (Page ix)

“Wherefore it must be recognised that the sacred writings are wrapt in a certain religious obscurity, and that no one can enter into their interior without a guide; God so disposing, as the Holy Fathers commonly teach, in order that men may investigate them with greater ardour and earnestness, and that what is attained with difficulty may sink more deeply into the mind and heart; and, most of all that they may understand that God has delivered the Holy Scriptures to the Church, and that in reading and making use of His Word, they must follow the Church as their guide and their teacher. St. Irenaeus long since laid down, that where the charismata of God were, there the truth was to be learnt, and that Holy Scripture was safely interpreted by those who had the Apostolic succession. His teaching, and that of other Holy Fathers, is taken up by the Council of the Vatican, which, in the renewing of the decree of Trent, declares its “mind” to be this–that “in things of faith and morals, belonging to the building up of Christian doctrine, that is to be considered the true sense of Holy Scripture which has been held and is held by our Holy Mother the Church whose place it is to judge of the true sense and interpretation of the Scriptures; and therefore that it is permitted to no one to interpret Holy Scripture against such sense or also against the unanimous agreement of the Fathers.” (Page xvii)

“Wherefore the first and dearest object of the Catholic commentator should be to interpret those passages which have received an authentic interpretation either by the sacred writers themselves, under the inspiration of the Holy Ghost (as in many places of the New Testament), or from the Church, under the assistance of the same Holy Spirit, whether by her solemn judgment or her ordinary and universal magisterium –to interpret those passages in that identical sense, and to prove, by all the resources of science that sound hermeneutical laws admit of no other interpretation. In the other passages, the analogy of faith should be followed, and Catholic doctrine, as authoritatively proposed by the Church, should be held as the supreme law; for seeing that the same God is the author both of the Sacred Books and of the doctrine committed to the Church, it is clearly impossible that any teaching can by legitimate means be extracted from the former, which shall in any respect be at variance with the latter. Hence it follows that all interpretation is foolish and false which either makes the sacred writers disagree one with another, or is opposed to the doctrine of the Church.” (Page xviii)

“For although the studies of non-Catholics, used with prudence, may sometimes be of use to the Catholic student, he should nevertheless, bear well in mind–as the Fathers also teach in numerous passages –that the sense of Holy Scripture can nowhere be found incorrupt outside of the Church, and cannot be expected to be found in writers who, being without the true faith, only gnaw the bark of the Sacred Scripture and never attain its pith.” (Page xix)

INTRODUCTION TO PART 15

[As I have mentioned in some previous posts in this series, in order to get this entire series finished in a timely manner, from now on I will be trying to keep my comments very brief and will mainly be making them in the introduction and closing sections of these posts. I will, however, continue to keep the focus on Scripture which is where it should be. I am also trying very hard (but not succeeding) to limit these posts to no more than 5000 words which makes it rather difficult sometimes. For those of you who have busy schedules and do not have the time to read lengthy posts, I will continue to highlight just some of the many troubling things in turquoise, and anything that is Biblical I will highlight in blue in order to quickly bring these things to your attention.]

Part 15 will focus on The Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation and cover pages 396 to the beginning portion of page 417.

First I would like to begin this post by sharing many Scriptures with you in order to make it very clear to you that on the basis of the truth of God’s Word we can have complete assurance of the forgiveness of sins because of everything that Jesus Christ has already done for us. There is no need for us to confess our sins to a priest or to anyone other than to God and God alone. If a person accepts the free gift of salvation paid with the precious blood of Jesus Christ, there is no punishment for sin that remains; Jesus Christ’s “once for all sacrifice” completely satisfied the just demands of a fully Holy God.

Even though the Catholic church does teach that Christ alone expiated our sins once for all (See below – Para 1460 in the CCC), their teachings of “purgatory,” “indulgences,” and “the Sacrifice of the Massnullify the truth of God’s Word by these “Traditions” (Matthew 15:3-9) of men that they put on the same level as Scripture. Sadly, many of the teachings that the Catholic church presents to precious Catholics do not allow them to discover the sufficiency of Jesus Christ’s “once for all” sacrifice. Instead they add man-made teachings to the truth of God’s Word, and the simplicity and joyously good news of the Biblical gospel remains hidden from them.

Keep the truth of the following Scriptures in mind as you take the time to read through Part 15 of this series in which we are continuing to compare Scriptures in a Catholic New Testament Bible to many teachings that can be found in the Catechism Of The Catholic Church not only to show precious Catholics the importance of testing what they are being taught in the Catholic church against the truth of God’s Holy Word, but also to inform Bible believing Christians what their precious Catholic friends believe because of what they are being taught:

“I am, I am he that blot out thy iniquities for my own sake, and I will not remember thy sins.” (Isaiah 43:25)

“I have blotted out thy iniquities as a cloud, and thy sins as a mist: return to me, for I have redeemed thee.” (Isaiah 44:22)

“You must not be called ‘Teacher,’ because you are all brothers of one another and have only one Teacher. And you must not call anyone here on earth ‘Father’ because you have only the one Father in heaven.” (Matthew 23:8,9)

“Jesus was preaching the message to them, when a paralyzed man, carried by four men, was brought to him. Because of the crowd, however, they could not get the man to Jesus. So they made a hole in the roof right above the place where Jesus was. When they had made an opening, they let the man down, lying on his mat. Jesus saw how much faith they had, and said to the paralyzed man, “My son, your sins are forgiven.” Some teachers of the Law who were sitting there, thought to themselves, “How does he dare talk against God like this? No man can forgive sins; only God can!” (Mark 2:2b-7, Luke 5:17-24 )

“Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life;  whoever disobeys the Son will never have life, but God’s wrath will remain on him forever.” (John 3:36 – SHLCNT)

Now look at how the same verse above reads in the Catholic Douay-Rheims Version below. Note the troubling difference between the two translations, the SHLCNT version above translates it as “whoever disobeys the Son will never have life, whereas the Douay-Rheims version (along with many other versions),  shows that if anyone chooses not to believe in the Son they do not have life, and God’s wrath remains upon them:

“He that believeth in the Son, hath life everlasting; but he that believeth not the Son, shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.”

Continuing on with a few more verses that reveal God’s truth to us on these important eternal matters:

“A man who works is paid; his wages are not regarded as a gift, but as something that he has earned. But the man who has faith, not works, who believes in the God who declares the guilty to be innocent, it is his faith that God takes into account in order to put him right with himself. This is what David meant when he spoke of the happiness of the man whom God accepts as righteous, apart from any works:

“Happy are those whose wrongs God has forgiven, whose sins he has covered over! Happy is the man whose sins the Lord will not keep account of!” (Romans 4:4-8 – SHLCNT)

“He was given over to die because of our sins, and was raised to life to put us right with God.” (Romans 4:25 – SHLCNT)

“For when we were still helpless, Christ died for the wicked, at the time that God chose. It is a difficult thing for someone to die for a righteous person. It may be that someone might dare to die for a good person. But God has shown us how much he loves us; it was while we were still sinners that Christ died for us! By his death we are now put right with God; how much more, then, will we be saved by him from God’s wrath. We were God’s enemies, but he made us his friends through the death of his Son. Now that we are God’s friends, how much more will we be saved by Christ’s life! But that is not all; we rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, who has now made us God’s friends.” (Romans 5:6-11 – SHLCNT)

“And there is a difference between God’s gift and the sin of one man. After the one sin came the judgment of “Guilty”; but after so many sins comes the undeserved gift of “Not guilty!” It is true that through the sin of one man death began to rule, because of that one man. But how much greater is the result of what was done by the one man, Jesus Christ! All who receive God’s abundant grace and the free gift of his righteousness will rule in life through Christ. So then, as the one sin condemned all men, in the same way the one righteous act sets all men free and gives them life.”(Romans 5:16-18 – SHLCNT)

“Surely you know that the wicked will not receive God’s Kingdom. Do not fool yourselves; people who are immoral, or worship idols, or are adulterers, or homosexual perverts, or who rob, or are greedy, or are drunkards, or who slander others, or are thieves–none of these will receive God’s Kingdom. Some of you were like that. But you have been cleansed from sin; you have been dedicated to God; you have been put right with God through the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.” (1 Corinthians 6:9-11 – SHLCNT)

“When anyone is joined to Christ he is a new being; the old has gone, the new has come. All this is done by God, who through Christ changed us from enemies into his friends, and gave us the task of making others his friends also. Our message is that God was making friends of all men through Christ. God did not keep an account of their sins against them, and he has given us the message of how he makes them his friends. Here we are, then, speaking for Christ, as though God himself were appealing to you through us: on Christ’s behalf, we beg you, let God change you from enemies into friends.”(2 Corinthians 5:17-20 – SHLCNT)

“God had already decided that through Jesus Christ he would bring us to himself as his sons–this was his pleasure and purpose. Let us praise God for his glorious grace, for the free gift  he gave us in his dear Son! For by the death of Christ we are set free, that is, our sins are forgiven. How great is the grace of God, which he gave to  us in such large measure!” (Ephesians 1:5-8a – SHLCNT)

“For there is one God, and there is one who brings God and men together, the man Christ Jesus, who gave himself to redeem all men.” (1 Timothy 2:5,6 – SHLCNT) 

“For there is one God, and one mediator of God and men, the man Christ Jesus: Who gave himself a redemption for all, a testimony in due times. ” (1 Timothy 2:5,6 – Douay-Rheims)

“I write you this, my children, so that you will not sin; but if anyone does sin, we have Jesus Christ, the righteous, who pleads for us with the Father. And Christ himself is the means by which our sins are forgiven, and not our sins only, but also the sins of all men.” (1 John 2:1,2 – SHLCNT)

CHAPTER TWO

THE SACRAMENTS OF HEALING

Para 1421

The Lord Jesus Christ, physician of our souls and bodies, who forgave the sins of the paralytic and restored him to bodily health,(3 – Cf. Mk 2:1-12) has willed that his Church continue, in the power of the Holy Spirit, his work of healing and salvation, even among her own members. This is the purpose of the two sacraments of healing: the sacrament of Penance and the sacrament of Anointing of the Sick.

ARTICLE 4

THE SACRAMENT OF PENANCE AND RECONCILIATION

Para 1422

Those who approach the sacrament of  Penance obtain pardon from God’s mercy for the offense committed against him, and are, at the same time reconciled with the Church which they have wounded by their sins, and which by charity, by example, and by prayer labors for their conversion.” (4 – LG 11 § 2).

I. WHAT IS THE SACRAMENT CALLED?

It is called the sacrament of confession since the disclosure or confession of sins to a priest is an essential element of this sacrament.

It is called the sacrament of forgiveness, since by the priest’s sacramental absolution God grants the penitent “pardon and peace.”

V. THE MANY FORMS OF PENANCE IN CHRISTIAN LIFE

Conversion is accomplished in daily life by gestures of reconciliation, concern for the poor, the exercise and defense of justice and right, by the admission of faults to one’s brethren, fraternal correction, revision of life, examination of conscience, spiritual direction, acceptance of suffering, endurance of persecution for the sake of righteousness. Taking up one’s cross each day and following Jesus is the surest way of penance. (34 – Cf. Luke 9:23).

Eucharist and Penance.  Daily conversion and penance find their source and nourishment in the Eucharist, for in it is made present the sacrifice of Christ which has reconciled us with God. Through the Eucharist those who live from the life of Christ are fed and strengthened. “It is a remedy to free us from our daily faults and preserve us from mortal sins.” (35 – Council of Trent (1551): DS 1638).

Reading Sacred Scriptures, praying the Liturgy of the Hours, and the Our Father–every sincere act of worship or devotion revives the spirit of conversion and repentance within us and contributes to the forgiveness of our sins.

VI.  THE SACRAMENT OF PENANCE AND RECONCILIATION

Sin is before all else an offense  against God, a rupture of communion with him. At the same time it damages communion with the Church. For this reason conversion entails both God’s forgiveness and reconciliation with the Church, which are expressed and accomplished liturgically by the sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation.(38 – Cf. LG 11).

Reconciliation with the Church is inseparable from reconciliation with God.

The sacrament of forgiveness

Para 1446

Christ instituted the sacrament of Penance for all sinful members of his Church: above all for those who, since Baptism, have fallen into grave sin, and have thus lost their baptismal grace and wounded ecclesial communion. It is to them that the sacrament of Penance offers a new possibility to convert and to recover the grace of justification. The Fathers of the Church present this sacrament as “the second plank [of salvation] after the shipwreck which is the loss of grace.”(47 – Terrtullian, De Paenit. 4, 2: PL 1, 1343; cf. Council of Trent (1547): DS 1542).

During the seventh century  Irish missionaries, inspired by the Eastern monastic tradition, took to continental  Europe the “private” practice of penance, which does not require public and prolonged completion of penitential works before reconciliation with the Church.

Beneath the changes in discipline and celebration that this sacrament has undergone over the centuries, the same fundamental structures is to be discerned. It comprises two equally essential elements; on the one hand, the acts of the man who undergoes conversion through the action of the Holy Spirit: namely, contrition, confession, and satisfaction;  on the other, God’s action through the intervention of the Church. The Church, who through the bishop and his priests forgive sins in the name of Jesus Christ and determines the manner of satisfaction, also prays for the sinner and does penance with him. Thus the sinner is healed and re-established in ecclesial communion.

VII.  THE ACTS OF THE PENITENT

Contrition

Para 1452

When it arises from a love by which God is loved above all else, contrition is called “perfect” (contrition of charity). Such contrition remits venial sin; it also obtains forgiveness of mortal sins if it includes the firm resolution to have recourse to sacramental confession as soon as possible. (51 – Cf. Council of Trent (1551): DS 1677).

Confession to a priest is an essential part of the sacrament of Penance.

Without being strictly necessary, confession of every day faults (venial sins) is nevertheless is strongly recommended by the Church. (59 – Cf. Council of Trent: DS 1680; CIC, can. 988 § 2).

Satisfaction

Para 1459

But sin also injures and weakens the sinner himself, as well as his relationship with God and neighbor. Absolution takes away sin, but it does not remedy all the disorders sin has caused. (62) Raised up from sin, the sinner must still recover his full spiritual health by doing something more to make amends for the sin: he must “make satisfaction for” or “expiate” his sins. This satisfaction is also called “penance.” (62 – Cf. Council of Trent (1551): DS 1712).

It can consist of prayers, an offering, works of mercy, service of neighbors, voluntary self-denial, sacrifices, and above all the patient acceptance of the cross we must bear. Such penances help configure us to Christ, who alone expiated our sins once for all. They allow us to become co-heirs  with the risen Christ, “provided we suffer with him.” (63 – Romans 8:17; Romans 3:25; 1 John 2:1-2; cf. Council of Trent (1551): DS 1690).

VIII.  THE MINISTER OF THIS SACRAMENT

Forgiveness of sins brings reconciliation with God, but also with the [Catholic] Church. (67 – Cf. CIC, cann. 844; 967-969; 972; CCEO, can. 722 §§ 3-4). [NOTE: The word Catholic was inserted by me for clarification and to remind you that every time you see the word church used with a capital C, they are referring to the Catholic Church.]

IX. THE EFFECTS OF THIS SACRAMENT

“The whole power of the sacrament of Penance consists in restoring us to God’s grace and joining us with him in an intimate friendship.”(73 – Roman Catechism, II, V, 18).

This sacrament reconciles us with the Church.

Para 1470

In this sacrament, the sinner, placing himself before the merciful judgment of God, anticipates in a certain way the judgement to which he will be subjected at the end of his earthly life. For it is now, in this life, that we are offered the choice between life and death, and it is only by the road of conversion that we can enter the kingdom, from which one is excluded by grave sin. (79 – Cf. 1 Corin. 5:11; Gal 5:19-21; Rev 22:15). In converting to Christ through penance and faith, the sinner passes from death to life and “does not come under judgment.”(80 – Jn. 5:24).

X.  INDULGENCES

The doctrine and practice of indulgences in the Church are closely linked to the effects of the sacrament of Penance.

What is an indulgence?

An indulgence is partial or plenary according as it removes either part or all of the temporal punishment due to sin.(82) The faithful can gain indulgences for themselves or apply them to the dead.* *(82 – CIC, can. 944.)

The punishment of sin

To understand this doctrine and practice of the Church, it is necessary to understand that sin has a double consequence. Grave sin deprives of communion with God and therefore makes us incapable of eternal life, the privation of which is called the “eternal punishment” of sin. On the other hand every sin, even venial entails an unhealthy attachment to creatures, which must be purified either here on earth, or after death in the state called Purgatory. This purification frees one from what is called the “temporal punishment” of sin. These two punishments must not be conceived of as a kind of vengeance inflicted by God from without, but as following from the very nature of sin. A conversion which proceeds from a fervent charity can attain the complete purification of the sinner in such a way that no punishment would remain.”(83 – Cf. Council of Trent (1551): DS 1712-1713; (1563): 1820).

The forgiveness of sin and restoration of communion with God entail the remission of the eternal punishment of sin, but temporal punishment of sin remains. While patiently bearing sufferings and trials of all kinds and, when the day comes, serenely facing death, the Christian must strive to accept this temporal punishment of sin as a grace. He should strive by works of mercy and charity, as well as by prayer and the various practices of penance, to put off completely the “old man” and to put on the “new man.” (84 – Eph. 4:22,24)

In the Communion of Saints

In the communion of saints “a perennial link of charity exists between the faithful who have already reached their heavenly home, those who are expiating their sins in purgatory and those who are still pilgrims on earth. Between them there is, too, an abundant exchange of all good things.” (86 – Indulgentiarum doctrina, 5). In this wonderful exchange, the holiness of one profits others, well beyond the harm that the sin of one could cause others. Thus recourse to the communion of saints lets the contrite sinner be more promptly and efficaciously purified of the punishment for sin.

We also call these spiritual goods of the communion of saints the Church’s treasury, which is not the sum total of the material goods which have accumulated during the course of the centuries. On the contrary the ‘treasury of the Church’ is the infinite value, which can never be exhausted , which Christ’s merits have before God. They were offered so that the whole of mankind could be set free from sin and attain communion with the Father. In Christ, the Redeemer himself, the satisfactions and merits of his Redemption exist and find their efficacy.” (87 – Indulgentiarum doctrina, 5).

“This treasury includes as well the prayers and good works of the Blessed Virgin Mary. They are truly immense, unfathomable, and even pristine in their value before God. In the treasure, too, are the prayers and good works of all the saints, all those who have followed in the footsteps of Christ the Lord and by his grace have made their lives holy and carried out the mission the Father entrusted to them. Obtaining indulgence from God through the Church

Para 1478

An indulgence is obtained through the Church who, by virtue of the power of binding and loosing granted her by Christ Jesus, intervenes in favor of individual Christians and opens for them the treasury of the merits of Christ and the saints to obtain from the Father of mercies the remission of the temporal punishment due for their sins. Thus the Church does not want simply to come to the aid of these Christians, but also to spur them to works of devotion, penance, and charity. (89 – Cf. Indulgentiarum doctrina, 5).

Since the faithful departed now being purified are also members of the same communion of saints, one way we can help them is to obtain indulgences for them, so that the temporal punishment due for their sins may be remitted.

XI.  THE CELEBRATION OF THE SACRAMENT OF PENANCE

Para 1480

Like all the sacraments, Penance is a liturgical action. The elements of the celebration are ordinarily these: a greeting and blessing from the priest, reading the word of God to illuminate the conscience and elicit contrition, and an exhortation to repentance; the confession, which acknowledges sins and makes them known to the priest; the imposition and acceptance of a penance; the priest’s absolution; a prayer of thanksgiving and praise and dismissal with the blessing of the priest.

The sacrament of Penance is a whole consisting in three actions of the penitent and the priest’s absolution. The penitent’s acts are repentance, confession or disclosure of sins to the priest, and the intention to make reparation and do works of reparation.

Para 1493

One who desires to obtain reconciliation with God and with the Church, must confess to a priest all the unconfessed grave sins he remembers after having carefully examined his conscience. The confession of venial faults, without being necessary in itself, is nevertheless strongly recommended by the Church.

Para 1495

Only priests who have received the faculty of absolving from the authority of the Church can forgive sins in the name of Christ.

Para 1496

The spiritual effects of the sacrament of Penance are:

–reconciliation with God by which the penitent recovers grace;

–reconciliation with the Church;

–remission of the eternal punishment incurred by mortal sins;

–remission, at least in part, of temporal punishments resulting from sin;

–peace and serenity of conscience, and spiritual consolation;

–an increase of spiritual strength for the Christian battle

Individual and integral confession of grave sins followed by absolution remains the only ordinary means of reconciliation with God and with the Church.

Para 1498

Through indulgences the faithful can obtain the remission of temporal punishment resulting from sin for themselves and also for the souls in Purgatory.

MORTAL AND VENIAL SIN

In Catholicism, sin is classified into two categories; mortal sin and venial sin. (You will hear a Catholic priest explain this in the video further below). As a young child I was taught that mortal sins are serious sins, such as murder, and venial sins are lesser sins, like fighting with your brothers and sisters, disobeying your parents, and lying.  However, God’s Word makes it abundantly clear that all sin is mortal; the wages of sin is death (Romans 6:23). God’s Word also says that all liars will be thrown into the lake of fire –hell. (Revelation 21:8)

“Then the one who sits on the throne said, “And now I make all things new!” He also said to me,  “Write this, because these words are true and can be trusted.” And he said, “It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. To anyone who is thirsty I will give a free drink of water from the spring of the water of life. Whoever wins the victory will receive this from me. I will be his God, and he will be my son. But the cowards, the traitors, and the perverts, the murderers, and the immoral, those who practice magic and those who worship idols, and all liars–the place for them is the lake burning with fire and sulfur, which is the second death.” (Revelation 21:5-8 – SHLCNT)

Regardless of how minor the sin may appear to us, or how horrific the sin may be, all sin separates us from a completely Holy God and all sin can be forgiven. There is no other way for any of us (Catholic, Protestant, Buddhist, Hindu, Jehovah Witness, Mormon, Muslim, etc., etc.), to be forgiven for our sins and to be reconciled with God except by coming to God the Father through Jesus Christ the Son — the second Person of the Trinity and only Mediator between sinful man and a thrice Holy God — and by receiving the free gift of eternal life by placing our full trust in all that Jesus Christ has already done for us. This is the only way that God has provided for us to be forgiven and to have a relationship with Him. We can neither receive forgiveness for sin by trusting in a sacramental system that is said to impart grace that can be lost again by committing more sin, nor can we receive or earn God’s forgiveness by doing good works or by going to Mass (or any church service). Only  by choosing to place our full trust in the “once for all” sacrifice that Jesus Christ offered to God His Father when He willingly took upon Himself God’s full wrath that He has towards us because of our sins after He was nailed to the cross, died in our place, and arose from the dead in bodily form three days later, can we receive His forgiveness. Jesus Christ lived the perfect, sinless life that we could never live; He was the perfect, spotless Lamb of God who came to take away the sins of the world.

“Venial sin wounds our friendship with God. Mortal sins, as the name implies, deals to our souls a mortal wound. That is to say it destroys the life of grace in us. It ruptures our friendship with God, and, if we have the misfortune to die in a state of mortal sin, why then, we suffer eternal death in hell. Mortal sin is something we can’t simply stumble into by accident…”

In the following video, Pastor Dan Carpenter answers a caller’s question. He addresses apostolic succession, do priests have the power to forgive sins (as the Catholic church teaches based on John 20:23), and is there any other mediator besides Jesus Christ:


In the following video this pastor makes an excellent point regarding John 20:23 by basically saying that if Jesus truly was giving the apostles the power to forgive sins, the context of this passage of Scripture clearly shows that the apostle Thomas wasn’t present that day, and Jesus certainly wouldn’t have done something so important as that when the apostles weren’t all together.


IN CLOSING:

So much more could be said, and I could share so many more Scriptures with you, but this post is now much longer than I had intended for it to be and I must bring it to a close. I can think of no better way to end this particular post than by sharing this powerful and encouraging Scripture with you that God brought to my attention in the spring of 1980. I was at the point where I was struggling between believing the joyously good news of the Biblical gospel that I discovered as I read that little Catholic New Testament, and what I believed regarding all that I had been taught as a Catholic. As I held my little Catholic New Testament, I cried out to God and asked Him to confirm to me in His Word that what I was reading was really true. To think that Jesus Christ actually paid the debt for all of my sins — in full — and that I didn’t have to burn in purgatory for “temporal punishment still due for sins” as I was taught, just seemed too amazingly good to be true! I opened my little Catholic New Testament and saw this verse in 1 John for the very first time:

“We believe the witness that men give; the witness that God gives is much stronger, and this is the witness that God has given about His Son. So whoever believes in the Son of God has this witness in his heart; but whoever does not believe God has made a liar out of him, because he has not believed what God has said as a witness about his Son. This, then is the witness: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life. I write you this so that you may know that you have eternal life–you that believe in the name of the Son of God.” (1 John 5:9-13) [NOTE: Emphasis is mine.]

When I first read that verse, the truth about the power and splendor of who Jesus Christ really was — and is — and the reality of all that He truly accomplished for us by His once for all sacrifice on the cross (which led to His death, burial, and glorious resurrection from the dead) became crystal clear to me! I no longer had the fear of death or any doubt remaining about the sufficiency of Jesus’ once for all sacrifice because God’s Word clearly shows us that we can have the assurance of salvation now, as long as our faith and trust are only in all that Jesus Christ already did for us. I pray that your eyes will also be opened to see this amazing truth that can be found in God’s Word and that you also will choose to believe it.

Dear Catholic, (and dear reader, whoever you may be), once again I present you with this important question that I had to answer back in 1980:

Are you going to believe the Word of God (Scripture), or the word of man (Tradition)?

SERIES INTRODUCTION

There are two very important reasons why I felt compelled to write this series of posts, and I’d like to briefly share these reasons with you now before I go any further:

1) Since I am a former Catholic who is very aware of the teachings of the Catholic Church because I attended twelve years of Catholic school, attended Catechism classes, made my First Holy Communion, was Confirmed, and faithfully attended Mass not only every Sunday for many years, but also before school began for three years (as required by the school that I attended at the time), and who came to the knowledge of who Jesus Christ truly is and what He actually accomplished for us by reading a Catholic New Testament Bible exactly like the one pictured above, I decided to write this series with the hope of reaching precious Catholics so that they can not only come to an understanding of who Jesus Christ truly is as His Word, the Bible, declares Him to be, but also so they can see by reading God’s Word that they can have complete forgiveness, lasting joy, true peace, and the assurance of salvation if they choose to believe God’s Word and place their trust in Jesus Christ alone for their salvation. Also, since many Catholics do not realize everything that the Catholic church actually teaches (as I once did not realize until after doing research and reading the CCC), I thought that it was extremely important to share this information to make Catholics aware of many things that are quite disturbing, as you will all soon become aware of as this series continues.

2) This series of posts is also being written with the intention of helping those of you who are born-again, Bible believing followers of Jesus Christ who have no idea of what the teachings of Catholicism are so that you can become aware of their teachings and be prepared to offer hope and assurance of salvation through Jesus Christ to Catholics based solely upon the truth that is recorded in God’s Word.

As we continue on in this series together comparing Scriptures in the Catholic New Testament to teachings found in the Catechism of the Catholic Church, we must keep these important thoughts in mind:

When it comes to our eternal destination — heaven or hell — we must be certain that we place our trust in solid truth and not in speculation or in the traditions of men. The Catholic church claims to be the “one true Church.” Therefore, it stands to reason that their teachings must line up with God’s Word and not contradict it since God does not change (Malachi 3:6, James 1:17, Hebrews 13:8), and His Word stands firm forever. (Psalm 119:89, Isaiah 40:8, 1 Peter 1:24,25) If a contradiction is found it must be rejected because God’s Word is our plumb line by which we must measure (or test) the teachings of every religion to see if it lines up or not. If it is off in one point we can be certain that it will lead us further and further away from Biblical truth and lead us into spiritual deception.

This series will cover many different subjects ranging from what does the Catholic Church teach about the Bible, Jesus Christ, the Virgin Mary, priests, the pope, sin, forgiveness of sins, salvation, prayer, and what must a Catholic believe in order to receive eternal life. Some of these teachings will shock even many Catholics when they learn what their church actually teaches!

Lord willing, I hope to share at least one post every month with you in this new series until I have covered all the most important teachings that need to be brought to your attention. The main goal that I have in writing this series is to present the Word of God to Catholics — and to every person — in order to point everyone to Jesus Christ, who is our only hope and ‘the only name under heaven given among men by which we can be saved.’ (Acts 4:12)

Dear Catholic, please take a minute now to sincerely pray; ask God to open your mind to the Scriptures and to reveal the truth to you –whatever that may be.

Because only God can reveal the truth to you, I will refrain from making any comments unless I find it completely necessary. Since God’s Word is truth I trust that He will not only give you eyes to see the truth, but also I trust that He will give you the courage to respond to His leading. However, each one of you will find yourself having to answer this question when you come to many points that I present to you in these posts after realizing that there are oftentimes extreme differences between what the Word of God says and what Catholicism teaches, and the question that you will have to answer is:

“Are you going to believe the Word of God, or the word of man?”

For those of you who are not Catholic, and are taking the time to read these posts in order to learn what Catholicism actually teaches, please keep in mind that every time you see the word “church” spelled with a capital c they are referring to the Catholic church, since they believe that the “Catholic Church” alone is the “one true Church.”All of the information that I will be sharing with you I have obtained from the following sources:

3) Occasionally when I share a Scripture with you from the Sacred Heart League (SHL) Catholic New Testament and notice that it lacks depth and clarity, I will then follow it with the same verse but in the King James Version in order to give you a better understanding of what is being said, and so that you can see what is missing from the SHL translation.

4) Very briefly in this series, I will also be quoting from THE CATHOLIC DOUAY RHEIMS VERSION OF THE BIBLE – in which you will find the following statements:

“EXCERPT FROM ENCYCLICAL LETTER OF OUR HOLY FATHER BY DIVINE PROVIDENCE POPE LEO XIII ON THE STUDY OF HOLY SCRIPTURE:

INTRODUCTION TO PART 12

[In order to get this entire series finished in a timely manner, from now on I will be keeping my comments very brief and will mainly be making them in the introduction and closing sections of these posts. I will, however, continue to keep the focus on Scripture which is where it should be.]

In PART 12 we will be covering pages 341-367 in the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC) which focuses on two of Catholicism’s “Seven Sacraments –Baptism and Confirmation. The sacramental system is what keep precious Catholics dependent upon the Catholic church for their salvation, as you will see by reading these next posts in this series which will address all of the sacraments of the Catholic church.

For those of you who have very busy schedules and thus very little time to read long articles such as these, I have highlighted some of the many statements that I found to be quite troubling in turquoise in order to quickly draw your attention to them with the hope of also saving you some time. I have also highlighted portions of certain Scriptures in royal blue to emphasize the Biblical truth that is presented in these verses in order to expose the unbiblical things that are taught in Catholicism.

Let’s begin:

SECTION TWO

THE SEVEN SACRAMENTS OF THE CHURCH

Christ instituted the sacraments of the new law. There are seven: Baptism, Confirmation (or Chrismation), the Eucharist, Penance, the Anointing of the Sick, Holy Orders, and Matrimony.

THE SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM

Para 1213

Through Baptism we are freed from sin and reborn as sons of God; we become members of Christ, are incorporated into the Church and made sharers in her mission: “Baptism is the sacrament of regeneration through water in the word.”

NOTE: Baptism does not free us from sin; it is the precious blood of Jesus Christ — not water — that frees us/cleanses us from all sin. The Word of God clearly shows us that baptism is symbolic; we are identifying with Jesus Christ in His death, burial, and resurrection. We are reborn/born-again by the Spirit of God when we hear the truth presented in the Biblical gospel and choose to believe it and trust only in all that Jesus Christ accomplished for us. We then choose to publicly become baptized in order to show everyone that we are leaving our old life behind and coming up out of the waters to show our newness in Christ and that we are choosing to follow Him:

REGARDING BAPTISM, THE WORD OF GOD SAYS:

“Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved; whoever does not believe will be condemned.” (Mark 16:16) [NOTE: Baptism follows belief.]

“For surely you know this: when we were baptized into union with Christ Jesus, we were baptized into union with his death. By our Baptism, then, we were buried with him and shared his death in order that, just as Christ was raised  from death by the glorious power of the Father, so also we might live a new life.” (Romans 6:3,4)

“The few people in the ark–eight in all–were saved by the water, which was a figure pointing tobaptism, which now saves you. It is not the washing off of bodily dirt, but the promise made to God from a good conscience. It [baptism] saves you through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, who has gone to heaven and is at the right side of God, ruling over all angels and heavenly authorities and powers.” (1 Peter 3:20b-22)(SHLCNT)

REGARDING JESUS’ BLOOD CLEANSING US FROM SIN, THE WORD OF GOD SAYS:

[NOTE: As I looked up all of the following verses in my Sacred Heart League Catholic New Testament, it was very troubling to see how this particular translation replaced almost every instance where the word blood is used, and instead they chose to use the word, death, as you will see if you choose to click on the links that I have added below. To some this may seem like  a trivial matter, but it is not!]

“Keep watch over yourselves and over all the flock which the Holy Spirit has placed in your care. Be shepherds of the church of God, which he made his own through the death of his own Son.” (Acts 20:28)(SHLCNT) [NOTE: Every translation listed here on biblehub.com uses the word blood, instead of death, including the Catholic Douay-Rheims Version, as you can see below.]

“This is the covenant that I will make with them in the days to come, says the Lord: I will put my laws in their hearts, and write them on their minds.” And then he says, “I will not remember their sins and wicked deeds any longer.” So when these have been forgiven, an offering to take away sins is no longer needed. We have, then, brothers, complete freedom to go into the Most Holy Place by means of the death [except for the Good News Translation, the word blood is used in all other translations on biblehub.com] of Jesus. “The Jewish High Priest brings the blood of the animals into the Most Holy Place to offer it as a sacrifice for sins; but the bodies of the animals are burned outside the camp. “Now this is the message that we have heard from his Son and announce to you: God is light and there is no darkness at all in him.” If, then, we say that we have fellowship with him, yet at the same time live in the darkness, we are lying both in our words and in our actions. REGARDING BEING REBORN/BORN-AGAIN, THE WORD OF GOD SAYS:

“Jesus answered, “I tell you the truth: no one can see the Kingdom of God unless he is born again.” “How can a grown man be born again?” Nicodemus asked. “He certainly cannot enter his mother’s womb and be born a second time!” “I tell you the truth,” replied Jesus, “that no one can enter the Kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit. A man is born physically of human parents, but he is born spiritually of the Spirit. Do not be surprised because I tell you, ‘You must all be born again.’ The wind blows wherever it wishes; you hear the sound it makes, but you do not know where it comes from or where it is going. It is the same way with everyone who is born of the Spirit.” (John 3:3-8) (SHLCNT)

Below is the explanation that I gave many years ago when replying to a comment that a Catholic made on my blog regarding Catholicism’s teaching on Baptism and being born-again:

Since Jesus Himself says to us in John 3:3, “I tell you the truth, unless a man is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God,” that makes it extremely important for us to understand exactly what Jesus means by being “born again.” Let’s look at that verse again in context, by looking at the verses immediately surrounding that verse, because Jesus clearly reveals to us in those verses what He is saying to Nicodemus –and to us.

Starting from John 3:3: “In reply Jesus declared, “I tell you the truth, unless a man is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” “How can a man be born when he is old?” Nicodemus asked. “Surely he cannot enter a second time into his mother’s womb to be born!” Jesus answered, “I tell you the truth, unless a man is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit. You should not be surprised at My saying, ‘You must be born again.’ The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.”

Nicodemus is confused and is under the impression that Jesus is telling him he must be “physically” born again, and realizes and expresses just how impossible this would be, by saying:

“How can a man be born when he is old?” “Surely he cannot enter a second time into his mother’s womb to be born!”

But Jesus makes it clear to Nicodemus that he is talking about a spiritual birth, by making the distinction between our physical birth and a spiritual birth:

“Unless a man is “born of water,” implying the process of physical birth when the woman’s water bag breaks and the miracle of a physical new life begins. He continues by adding, “and the Spirit,” and goes a step further to make it even clearer to Nicodemus that He is talking about a spiritual rebirth when He says, in verse 6 of Chapter 3, “Flesh gives birth to flesh, (physical birth) “but the Spirit gives birth to spirit.” In that verse Jesus is also saying that the “Holy Spirit” is the one who is responsible to bring about this new birth in a person’s life.


Two more Scriptures regarding what the Bible says about being born again:

“For through the living and eternal word of God you have been born again as the children of a parent who is immortal, not mortal. As the Scripture says, “All men are like the wild grass, and all their glory is like its flower. The grass dies, and its flower falls off, but the word of the Lord remains forever.” (1 Peter 1:23) (SHLCNT)

“When anyone is joined to Christ, he is a new being; the old is gone, the new has come. All this is done by God, who through Christ changed us from enemies into his friends, and gave us the task of making others his friends also.” (2 Corinthians 5:17)(SHLCNT)

I. WHAT IS THIS SACRAMENT CALLED?

This sacrament is also called “the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit, “ for it signifies and actually brings about the birth of water and the Spirit without which no one “can enter the kingdom of God.”(7 – Titus 3:5 Jn 3:5)

Para 1216

This bath is called enlightenment, because those who receive this [catechetical] instruction are enlightened in their understanding…”(8) Having received in Baptism the Word, “the true light that enlightens every man,” the person baptized has been enlightened,” he becomes a “son of light,” indeed, he becomes light himself.(9) (8 – )(9 – Jn 1:9; 1 Thess 5:5; Heb 10:32; Eph 5:8)

The blood and water that flowed from the pierced side of the crucified Jesus are types of Baptism and the Eucharist, the sacraments of new life. (23) From then on, it is possible “to be born of water and the Spirit”(24) in order to enter the Kingdom of God. (23 – Cf. Jn 19:34; 1 Jn 5:6-8 )(24 – Cf. Jn 3:5)

Baptism in the Church

Para 1227

The baptized have “put on Christ.”(30 – Gal 3:27). Through the Holy Spirit, Baptism is a bath that purifies, justifies, and sanctifies.”(31 – Cf. 1 Cor 6:11; 12:13).

III. HOW IS THE SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM CELEBRATED?

The mystagogy of the celebration

Para 1234

The meaning and grace of the sacrament of Baptism are clearly seen in the rites of its celebration. By following the gestures and words of this celebration with attentive participation, the faithful are initiated into the riches this sacrament signifies and actually brings about in each newly baptized person.

Para 1235

The sign of the cross, on the threshold of the celebration,  marks with the imprint of Christ the one who is going to belong to him and signifies the grace of the redemption Christ won for us by his cross.

Para 1237

The celebrant then anoints him with the oil of catechumens, or lays his hands on him, and he explicitly renounces Satan. Thus prepared he is able to confess the faith of the Church, to which he will be “entrusted” by Baptism.(39 Cf. Romans 6:17).

The baptismal water is consecrated by a prayer of epiclesis (either at this moment or at the Easter Vigil). The Church asks God that through his Son the power of the Holy Spirit may be sent upon the water, so that those who will be baptized in it may be “born of water and the Spirit.“(40 – Jn 3:5)

The white garment symbolizes that the person baptized has “put on Christ,”(42) has risen with Christ. The candle, lit from the Easter candle signifies that Christ has enlightened the neophyte. In him the baptized are “the light of the world.” (43) The newly baptized is now, in the only Son, a child of God entitled to say the prayer of the children of God: “Our Father.” (42 – Gal 3:27). IV. WHO CAN RECEIVE BAPTISM?

The catechumens should be properly initiated into the mystery of salvation and the practice of the evangelical virtues, and they should  be introduced into the life of faith, liturgy, and charity of the People of God by successive sacred rites.”(47 – AG 14; cf RCIA 19;98)

The Church and the parents would deny a child the priceless grace of becoming a child of God were they not to confer Baptism shortly after birth.(51 – Cf. CIC, can. 867;CCEO, cann. 681; 686, 1).

V. WHO CAN BAPTIZE?

Para 1256

In case of necessity, anyone, even a non-baptized person, with the required intention, can baptize*, by using the Trinitarian baptismal formula. The intention required is to will to do what the Church does when she baptizes. The Church finds the reason for this possibility in the universal saving will of God and the necessity of Baptism for salvation.(58 – Cf. 1 Tim 2:4)

VI. THE NECESSITY OF BAPTISM

Para 1257

The Lord himself affirms that Baptism is necessary for salvation.(59) The Church does not know of any means other than Baptism that assures entry into eternal beatitude; this is why she takes care not to neglect the mission she has received from the Lord to see that all who can be baptized are “reborn of water and the Spirit.” God has bound salvation to the sacrament of Baptism, but he himself is not bound by his sacraments. (59 – Cf. Jn 3:5).

NOTE: If baptism is necessary for salvation, why then does the Word of God say that Jesus told the thief on the cross that he would enter paradise that very day with Him?

“One of the criminals hanging there hurled insults at him, “Aren’t you the Messiah? Save yourself and us!” The other one, however, rebuked him, saying, “Don’t you fear God? We are all under the same sentence. Ours, however, is only right, because we are getting what we deserve for what we did; but he has done no wrong.” And he said to Jesus, “Remember me, Jesus, when you come as King!Jesus said to him, “I tell you this: today you will be in Paradise with me.” (Luke 23:39-43) (SHLCNT)

“And one of those robbers who were hanged blasphemed him, saying: If thou be Christ, save thyself and us. But the other answering, rebuked him, saying: Neither dost thou fear God, seeing; thou art under the same condemnation? And we indeed justly: for we receive the due reward of our deeds. But this man hath done no evil. And he said to Jesus: Lord, remember me when thou shalt come into thy kingdom. And Jesus said to him: Amen I say to thee: This day thou shalt be with me in paradise.” (Luke 23:39-43) (Douay-Rheims)

If baptism is necessary for salvation, why didn’t Jesus send Paul out to also baptize?

Christ did not send me to baptize. He sent me to tell the Good News, and to tell it without using the language of men’s wisdom, to keep Christ’s death on the cross from being robbed of its power. For the message about Christ’s death on the cross is nonsense to those who are being lost; but for us who are being saved, it is God’s power. The Scripture says, “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and set aside the understanding of the scholars.” (1 Corinthians 1:17-19) (SHLCNT)

The Church has always held the firm conviction that those who suffer death for the sake of the faith without having received Baptism are baptized by their death for and with Christ. This Baptism of blood, like the desire for Baptism, brings about the fruits  of Baptism without being a sacrament.

For catechumens who die before their Baptism, their explicit desire to receive it, together with repentance for their sins, and charity, assures them the salvation that they were not able to receive through the sacrament.

Para 1261

As regards children who have died without Baptism, the Church can only entrust them to the mercy of God, as she does in her funeral rites for them. Indeed, the great mercy of God who desires that all men should be saved, and Jesus’ tenderness towards children which caused him to say: “Let the children come to me. do not hinder them,”(63) allow us to hope that there is a way of salvation for children who have died without Baptism. All the more urgent is the Church’s call not to prevent little children coming to Christ through the gift of holy Baptism. (63 – Mk. 10:14; cf. 1 Tim 2:4). [NOTE: There was a time when the Catholic church firmly taught that if a child died without being baptized they would forever be in a place called, Limbo.]

 

VII. THE GRACE OF BAPTISM

For the forgiveness of sins

Para 1263

By Baptism all sins are forgiven, original sin and all personal sins, as well as all punishment for sin.(65) In those who have been reborn nothing remains that would impede their entry into the kingdom of God, neither Adam’s sin, nor personal sin, nor the consequences of sin, the gravest of which is separation from God. (65- Cf. Council of Florence (1439): DS 1316)

Baptism not only purifies from all sins, but also makes the neophyte, “a new creature,” an adopted son of God, who has become a “partaker of the divine nature,”(68 – 2 Cor. 5:17; 2 Pet. 1:4; cf. Gal 4:5-7) member of Christ and co-heir with him,(69 Cf. 1 Cor 6:15; 12:27; Rom 8:17) and a temple of the Holy Spirit.(70 – Cf, 1 Cor 6:19).

Having become a member of the Church, the person baptized belongs no longer to himself, but to him who died and rose for us.(75 – Cf. 1 Cor. 6:19; 2 Cor. 5:15) From now on, he is called to be subject to others, to serve them in the communion of the Church, and to “obey and submit” to the Church’s leaders,(76 – Heb. 13:17) holding them in respect and affection.(77 – Cf. Eph.5:21; 1 Cor. 16:15-16; 1 Thess. 5:12-13; Jn. 13:12-15).

“Reborn as sons of God, [the baptized] must profess before men the faith they have received from God through the Church” and participate in the apostolic and missionary activity of the People of God.(79 – LG 11; cf. LG 17;AG 7;23).

Baptism constitutes the foundation of communion among all  Christians, including those who are not yet in full communion with the Catholic Church: “For men who believe in Christ and have been properly baptized are put in some, though imperfect, communion with the Catholic Church. Justified by faith in Baptism [they] are incorporated into Christ; they therefore have the right to be called Christians, and with good reason are accepted as brothers by the children of the Catholic Church.”(80 UR 3) Baptism therefore constitutes the sacramental bond of unity existing among all who through it are reborn.”(81 – UR 22 2).

Baptism is birth into the new life in Christ. In accordance with the Lord’s will, it is necessary for salvation, as is the Church herself, which we enter by Baptism.

Those who die for the faith, those who are catechumens, and all those who without knowing of the Church but acting under the inspiration of grace, seek God sincerely and strive to fulfill his will, can be saved even if they have not been baptized. (cf. LG 16).

With respect to children who have died without Baptism, the liturgy of the Church invites us to trust in God’s mercy and to pray for their salvation.

THE SACRAMENT OF CONFIRMATION

Baptism, the Eucharist, and the sacrament of Confirmation together constitute the “sacraments of Christian initiation,” whose unity must be safeguarded. It must be explained to the faithful that the reception of the sacrament of Confirmation is necessary for the completion of baptismal grace.(88 – Cf. Roman Ritual, rite of Confirmation (OC), Introduction 1). For “by the sacrament of Confirmation, [the baptized] are more perfectly bound to the Church, and are enriched with a special strength of the Holy Spirit. Hence they are, as true witnesses of Christ, more strictly obliged to spread and defend the faith by word and deed.”(89 – LG 11; cf. OC, Introduction 2).

The celebration of Confirmation

In the Roman rite the bishop extends his hands over the whole group of confirmands . Since the time of the apostles this gesture has signified the gift of the Spirit. The bishop invokes the outpouring of the Spirit in these words:

All powerful God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, by water and the Holy Spirit you freed your sons and daughters from sin and gave them new life. Send your Holy Spirit upon them to be their helper and guide.

 

III. THE EFFECTS OF CONFIRMATION

— it renders our bond with the Church more perfect (116 – cf LG 11)

IV. WHO CAN RECEIVE THIS SACRAMENT?

Para 1306

Every baptized person not yet confirmed can and should receive the sacrament of Confirmation. (121 – Cf. CIC, can. 889 S 1. ) Since Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist form a unity, it follows that “the faithful are obliged to receive this sacrament  at the appropriate time,” (122 – CIC, can. 890) for without Confirmation and Eucharist, Baptism is certainly valid and efficacious, but Christian initiation remains incomplete.

To receive Confirmation one must be in a state of grace. One must receive the sacrament of Penance in order to be cleansed for the gift of the Holy Spirit. (126 – Cf. Acts 1:14)

V. THE MINISTER OF CONFIRMATION

Para 1316

Confirmation perfects Baptismal grace; it is the sacrament which gives the Holy Spirit in order to root us more deeply in the divine filiation, incorporate us more firmly into Christ, strengthen our bond with the Church, associate us more closely with her mission, and help us bear witness to the Christian faith in words accompanied by deeds.

Para 1319

A candidate for Confirmation who has attained the age of reason must profess the faith, be in the state of grace, have the intention of receiving the sacrament, and be prepared to assume the role of disciple and witness to Christ, both within the ecclesial community and in temporal affairs.

CLOSING COMMENTS

For those of you who either were not raised Catholic or are unaware of all that Catholicism teaches, it is important for you to know that according to Catholicism, salvation depends upon their sacramental system through which grace is attained. Grace, according to the Catholic church, is something that is earned and can be lost due to sin. This is where the sacrament of Penance (which we will examine in PART 14 of this series) comes in, which is said to infuse one with grace, once again, after sins are confessed to a priest. Priests, according to the teachings of Catholicism (and from an improper interpretation of John 20:23), are said to have the power to forgive sins, when God’s Word clearly says that only God has the power to forgive sins. (Isaiah 43:25, Mark 2:6-12)

Precious Catholics do not understand that God’s Word declares that grace is a gift; it cannot be earned or lost. They are continually on a never ending hopeless cycle of sin, confess, do penance, restored grace, sin, confess, do penance, restored grace, etc., etc.  Jesus Christ is truly our only hope; there is no hope or assurance of salvation that can be found in any man-made religion.

Dear Catholic, once again I ask you:

Are you going to believe the Word of God? Or the word of man?

Your eternal destination — whether you are Catholic or otherwise — truly depends upon what or in whom you choose to place all of your trust. Will it be in Jesus Christ alone for your salvation? Or will you continue to believe what you are being taught in the Catholic church — or whatever type of house of worship you may be attending — when it completely contradicts the truth of God’s Holy Word?

For those of you who may come across this series and choose to take the time to read it, I pray that God will give you eyes to see the glorious truth that is revealed in His Word about all that Jesus accomplished for us to provide complete forgiveness of sins to all who will choose to believe it.

Sadly, we live at a time when many of us are like sheep without a shepherd. Many once trusted pastors and teachers have forgotten their God-given role of protecting their sheep from ravenous wolves and have chosen to willingly join with them wholeheartedly. Therefore, many precious Christians are prey for the enemy as they attempt to seek a new church where God’s Word is being preached without compromise, and some end up getting involved with another church where yet another form of compromise or spiritual deception is taking place. With that in mind I decided to no longer share any sermons from any pastors, because the more I find out about them, the more I realize that the only one we can completely trust is Jesus Christ. So, from now on I will just be sharing videos like the one below that just has the audio of God’s Word accompanied with videos that show the beauty of God’s creation, or videos that simply share the beauty of the truth of God’s Word because we should not seek things that simply appeal to our emotions. I hope that you will take a few minutes to listen and allow God’s Word to comfort your soul and cleanse your mind from worry, doubt, and fear, and guide you in truth.

Capture Isaiah 53 5

 This time of year is extra special to me because it was right before Easter in 1980 that I began to read the little Catholic New Testament Bible that was given to me. As I began to read it the truth of God’s Word began to strip away the man-made doctrines of Catholicism that obscured the truth of who Jesus truly is; He is not the victim as portrayed in every Sacrifice of the Mass, but rather the Victor over sin and death, because I discovered the joyous good news of the gospel –Jesus paid the debt of my sin in full! No longer was I in bondage to a religion that provided no assurance of salvation. I was free and had a peace that went beyond all human understanding because I saw my need for a Savior and placed my trust in Jesus Christ alone and in the truth of God’s Word, and not in my good works or the unreliable words of men!

Dear reader, is your trust in a false gospel made by man? Or is it founded upon the truth as revealed in Scripture? Are you accepting a man’s interpretation of Scripture? Or are you allowing the Holy Spirit to reveal the truth to you through the Living Word of God, by letting Scripture interpret other Scriptures? Are you attempting to earn your salvation? Or have you come to the point where you see yourself as a sinner in the sight of a thrice Holy God and realize that the only way you can be forgiven is to place your trust in the death, burial, and resurrection of His Son, Jesus Christ, God in the flesh as the one and only way that God provided for us to become righteous in His sight?

The good news of the gospel is that He died for my sins — and for yours — if you will only choose to place your trust in Him and Him alone for your salvation.

I hope and pray that you will take the time to reflect upon these Scriptures and to watch the sermon below. Pray and ask God to reveal the truth to you as He did for me as I read His Word. You too can have the assurance of salvation and a peace that goes beyond all human understanding if you will only turn to Him while there is still time!

 

SCRIPTURES FOR YOU TO REFLECT ON

“But God demonstrates His own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8)

“This is how God showed His love among us: He sent His one and only Son into the world that we might live through Him.  This is love: not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.” (1 John 4:9,10)

“As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient.  All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our sinful nature and following its desires and thoughts.  Like the rest, we were by nature objects of wrath.  But because of His great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions–it is by grace you have been saved.  And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with Him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, in order that in the coming ages He might show the incomparable riches of His grace, expressed in His kindness to us in Christ Jesus.  For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith–and this, not from yourselves, it is the gift of God–not by works, so that no one can boast.  For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”               (Ephesians 2:1-10)

“Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.” (Romans 5:1)

“For Christ died for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous to bring you to God.” (1 Peter 3:18)

Even though I have a lot of information that I want to share with you concerning what has been happening lately in the name of Christianity, I decided not to do a Mysticism Monday or a Warning You With Tears Wednesday post for you this week in order to keep the focus of this blog at this time completely on Jesus Christ alone and not on the many unbiblical things that are leading Christians astray, which is why I simply left the SERMON SUNDAY as the only post for this week, until now.

I also wanted some extra time during this season so that I would personally be able to  reflect on the high price that Jesus Christ paid when He endured such torture and ultimately gave His life in my place to pay the debt for all of my sins and guilt.

As much as I enjoy writing and sharing things with you, I want you to know that I also take blogging very seriously knowing that I will stand before God one day and answer for all that I have shared with you and what my motives were for doing so. I share that with you because as I was putting this post together for you I realized just how careful we all have to be in choosing what pastors and teachers we listen to! Originally I had chosen a sermon by the late Adrian Rogers to share with you, and I also added many more of his sermons because I thought he was still considered to be among the few  pastors and teachers left who are worthy of our trust. However, earlier today I discovered that he also slowly drifted from Biblical truth.  Lord willing, I will share what I discovered with you next week in my Warning You With Tears Wednesday post.

Thank you very much for stopping  by and taking time out of this special weekend to read some of my posts and poems. If you are a Christian then this weekend is indeed special to you. If you are not, I pray that you will consider reading the Bible for yourself and ask God to reveal the truth to you so that you too will discover the good news of the gospel! Then you will be able to rejoice in knowing that you can be released from all the sin and guilt that holds you in bondage if only you will believe and trust in what Jesus already did for you as being sufficient to pay for your sin and guilt –no matter what you may have done!

Keep in mind, though, that the Bible also says that the devil believes and he trembles! The devil knows who Jesus is, yet there must be a trust and reliance upon Jesus Christ and upon Him alone, which he will never have!   He was filled with pride and chose to rebel against God. I pray that you will not choose to do the same. Humbly bow before Him and admit your sinfulness before a completely Holy God and receive the only provision that God made for you to be forgiven and to have a relationship with Him, which is through His one and only Son –Jesus Christ, God in the flesh.

Praying For All Of You

First I want to say, “I’m sorry” to all of you for not writing anything lately.  To be honest with you, it’s been rather difficult to find the time to even have a few minutes to concentrate and get my thoughts together to write a post or poem since I lost my job of 13 years at the end of October.  I am still searching for a new job, and have had no replies from anyone on the two sites where I posted my resume’, but in Christ’s strength I continue to press on. 

In spite of everything I have been going through lately, I completely stand in awe of the peace that God has given me, and that’s what inspired me to write the following poem so that I can give God the glory for blessing me with His perfect peace that allows me to rest in Him and sleep peacefully every night.  Yes, I did have a few brief moments of crying out to God for His wisdom on what to do and where to go, and I may possibly still have a few of those moments in the days (hopefully not weeks and months) to come, but because I have built my life on Christ as my firm foundation, my faith and trust in Him has not been shaken.

As I was writing this poem I also thought of the many who do not know Jesus and the hope and peace that comes from having a personal relationship with God through Him…people who have been devastated by physical, sexual, and verbal abuse…people who have tragically lost a loved one to death or an accident, and they have been hurt so deeply that they lash out at God instead of crying out to Him for His comfort and His help…people who hate themselves because of some of the wrong choices they have made and they want to end their lives because they can’t go back and change the past.  With all of that in mind, I addressed these brokenhearted people in the final six verses of the following poem, and pray that if anyone who has been devastated by life’s painful circumstances does find their way to my blog,  that God will somehow use my poem — and especially the Scriptures — to bring hope and comfort to their broken and shattered heart.

“For  He Himself is our peace, who has made the two groups one and has destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility, by setting aside in His flesh the law with its commands and regulations.  His purpose was to create in Himself one new humanity out of the two, thus making peace, and in one body to reconcile both of them to God through the cross, by which He put to death their hostility.  He came and preached peace to you who were far away and peace to those who were near.  For through Him we both have access to the Father by one Spirit.” (Ephesians 2:14-18)

A PERFECT PEACE

Amidst deep feelings of rejection, there remains a perfect peace
Untouched by man’s cruel endeavors, I now see as God’s instruments of release
A perfect peace that only comes from knowing that God is in control
His peace silences every fearful thought that comes, and stills my very soul
Like the perfect peace that filled many hearts when Christ was born that starry night
The fulfillment of many prophecies, hope was born and fear gave flight
The Messiah, the Promised One, who came to free us from our sin
And clothe us in His righteousness, and transform our hearts within
He took on flesh so willingly, and willingly laid down His life for you and me
So that those who’d place their trust in Him would be forgiven and set free
Jesus bore the full wrath of God for all our sin, though Pilate fought for His release
So the barrier of sin would be removed, and with God, His Father, we’d then have
perfect peace
A peace beyond human comprehension, no matter what circumstances one may face
His strength made perfect in our weakness, and sufficient is His grace
A peace not based on mere emotion, but rooted in Christ and in His Word
For we stand on Christ, our firm foundation, unshaken by what we see or what we’ve
heard
We can have the calm assurance that God works all things together for our good
Even when we pray and trust, and things still don’t turn out as they should
Is your life in utter chaos, do you think He’s unaware…
Of all the pain you hold inside, do you believe He doesn’t care
Do you shake your fist at God, have you even convinced yourself He isn’t real
Have unspeakable tragedies severely affected how you see things, and how you feel
Cry out to God to know what’s true, turn from sin; find sweet release
You’ll receive His healing love and complete forgiveness, and you too can have…a
perfect peace

Capture You will know the truth and the truth will set you free

INTRODUCTION

Little did I realize at the end of 2012 when I first began to share with you that I would soon be sharing my testimony with you, that I would now be doing so at such a highly significant time in the history of the Catholic church.  Not only is it at the time shortly following Pope Benedict’s decision to step down from his position as head of the Catholic church — being the first pope to do so in nearly 600 years — but also at the time just following the election of the new pope — Pope Francis, the first Jesuit pope.  As always, God’s timing is perfect.

The reason I wanted to share my testimony with you at this point in time, is because of the fact that it was right before Easter in 1980 that God opened my eyes while reading a little Catholic New Testament Bible to see the glorious truth of what the message of the gospel really is.  Unfortunately, because life has been rather hectic lately, I was unable to have it completed for you by Easter because of all the information I intend to share with you.  So for now, I will simply post the poem I wrote last week, (which is like a Catholic version of my ‘Warning You With Tears’ poem) and I will continue to update this post, adding  my testimony, as well as important information to not only verify what I share with you, but also to help Catholics, as well as everyone else, see what the Catholic church actually teaches about salvation and many other important issues that greatly affects a person’s life, and most importantly, their eternal destination!  So, if you are interested, please consider checking back towards the end of May, when, Lord willing, I hope to have Part 1 of my testimony completed.

The reason I want to post my testimony  is because as a former Catholic, the desire of my heart is to reach many Catholics with the truth presented in God’s Word so that they may come to know how they too can have complete assurance that when they die they can go directly to heaven, all because of  Jesus Christ’s complete atoning work on the cross.  After God opened my eyes to see the truth in His Word, I went back to the Catholic church I attended and placed a leaflet containing the truth I found in the Bible, God’s Word, under the windshield wipers of each car in the parking lot during a mass, and finished just in time as all the people began to come out to their cars.  Now, instead of just reaching a few people in a parking lot, I pray that God will now use my testimony, and especially and specifically the truth presented in His Word, and send it out around the world so that many will come to know the truth, so that the truth of God’s Word will set many free!

AND THE TRUTH WILL SET YOU FREE

 

“A faithful Catholic through and through”

Many people say of you

Attending Mass, even more than once a week

Confessing your sins regularly, to the priest whom you seek

Praying each penance that is given to you

Along with countless rosaries, said from a heart that is sincere and true

Doing many good works, hoping they will outweigh the bad you have done

Never having realized the complete atoning work of Christ; God’s one and only Son

Trying so hard to earn more grace

Wanting your sins to be gone –without a trace

For help in times of crisis, Mary and the saints you do earnestly implore

Always going beyond what’s required of you, yet you still deeply fear what lies

beyond death’s door

Will you find yourself in the purging fires, for temporal penalty still due for your sin

How long, you wonder, will you be left there to burn, till heaven you can enter in

O precious Catholic, learn to think for yourself

Pick up your Bible that sits upon your shelf

You don’t need the pope or priest to reveal God’s truth that it holds inside

Pray and read it for yourself, let God’s Holy Spirit be your guide

Test the doctrines of the church against what God’s Word says to you

I pray that God will give you eyes to see what’s really true

No longer will you then fear what lies beyond death’s door

Your heart can be filled with God’s perfect peace, now, and forevermore

You will find Christ has paid your debt to sin in full; nothing left at all for you to pay

It is by God’s grace alone you have been saved, out of love you now choose to obey

Be willing to turn from sin with a heart that is overwhelmed with sorrow

Jesus said,  “Unless you repent you will perish,” so it may be too late if you wait

till tomorrow

Place your trust in Christ alone, on the cross He died; He took your place

God’s wrath towards you for your sins has been fully satisfied, you can be covered

with Christ’s righteousness and His saving grace

You can then pray directly to God the Father, through Jesus Christ, God the Son, alone

He is our only mediator, and reigns in glory, and will Himself intercede for you

as He sits upon His throne

Confusion will begin to fill your mind, as God’s truth exposes much of what you

believe to be true

Will you then believe the Word of God, or still believe all that has been told to you

Pray and examine the Scriptures carefully, and God’s joyous truths you will clearly see

And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free

Many of us attempt to earn God’s forgiveness and think that if we are basically a ‘good person,’ that when the time comes for us to stand before God, He will accept us if we just try and make sure the good outweighs the bad we have done in life.  But most of us lose sight of the fact that God is completely Holy and that His standard is perfection. 

So, how many of us can say we are perfect?  None of us…if we’re completely honest.  God gave us the commandments to show us what sin is, and also to make us realize just how impossible it is for us to be able to obey them all.  So if God’s standard is perfection and if all of us fall way short of that standard, then we are lost and without hope.

That is why God, who is rich in mercy, sent His One and Only Son; He lived a perfect, sinless life that none of us could ever live,  to become the perfect and acceptable sacrifice for our sins.  Jesus willingly allowed God His Father to pour the entire amount of His wrath that we deserve upon Himself, and He died in our place.  And in return, if we choose to place our trust in this free gift of His grace, paid with the life blood of Jesus–who was God in the flesh–He will completely forgive us of our sins.  That is what’s known as ‘The Great Exchange’…our sins were placed upon the sinless spotless Lamb of God, and in return we are then covered with the righteousness of Jesus. 

Sadly, however, many religions have evolved over time, because instead of accepting this free but costly gift, many people came up with rules and rituals in an attempt to earn God’s forgiveness.  I was one of many trapped in one of these religions.  I was bound by fear and never knew what Jesus really accomplished when He died and rose from the dead.  (More to come).

“When Christ came as high priest of the good things that are already here, He went through the greater and more perfect tabernacle that is not man-made, that is to say, not a part of this creation.  He did not enter by means of the blood of goats and calves; but He entered the Most Holy Place once for all by His own blood, having obtained eternal redemption.  The blood of goats and bulls and the ashes of a heifer sprinkled on those who are ceremonially unclean sanctify them so that they are outwardly clean.  How much more, then, will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself unblemished to God, cleanse our consciences from acts that lead to death so that we may serve the living God!”  (Hebrews 9:11-14)

“For Christ did not enter a man-made sanctuary that was only a copy of the true one; He entered heaven itself, now to appear for us in God’s presence.  Nor did He enter heaven to offer Himself again and again, the way the high priest enters the Most Holy Place every year with blood that is not his own.  Then Christ would have had to suffer many times since the creation of the world.  But now He has appeared once for all at the end of the ages to do away with sin by the sacrifice of Himself.  Just as man is destined to die once and after that to face judgment, so Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many people; and He will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for Him.”  (Hebrews 9:24-28)

“For Christ died for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God.”     (1 Peter 3:18)

“For if a law had been given that could impart life, then righteousness would certainly have come by the law.  But the Scripture declares that the whole world is a prisoner of sin, so that what was promised, being given through faith in Jesus Christ, might be given to those who believe.  Before this faith came, we were held prisoners by the law, locked up until faith should be revealed.  So the law was put in charge to lead us to Christ that we might be justified by faith.”  (Galatians 3:21-24)

“But God demonstrates His own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”  (Romans 5:8)

“For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith — and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God –not by works, so that no one can boast.  For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”                     (Ephesians 2:8-10)

“This is love: not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.”  (1 John 4:10)

ONCE

He died once for all, when He shed His blood for you and me

Once for all, so from sin’s power we’d be set free

Taking all God’s hatred for the sin we love that only leads to death

Jesus hung in our stead upon the cross until He took His final breath

Pain beyond our comprehension He endured on our behalf

Our sin demanded justice, so Jesus chose to endure God’s wrath

No other sacrifice is needed, for our debt to sin He paid in full

And the perfect sacrifice of the Son of God was enough to break sin’s overwhelming pull

Still many reject the love He expressed, when He died on Mount Calvary

Some choose instead to continue in open rebellion and hidden sin, refusing His grace that would

set them free

Others depend on good works and their own righteous deeds, and hope the good will outweigh

the bad they have done

And some so horrified by sins they’ve committed, can’t seem to accept God’s forgiveness paid with

the blood of His One and Only Son

But this fact is clear, so solid and true

That Jesus’ death was sufficient to pay for all sin and shame for me and you

Our sins have been atoned for, heaven’s gates are opened wide

So don’t cling to your religion, false doctrine, sin, or pride

Turn from sin, place your trust fully in Him

For only by trusting in His one perfect sacrifice you can know you will one day enter in

Easter Poem 2011  IT IS FINISHED 

INTRODUCTION

At the end of May I started to reflect upon  my life, and the things I have done in my past before I became a Christian that fill me with regret and are a continual reminder to me that I am a sinner saved by grace,  even though I know God has forgiven and changed me.  I was so moved with gratitude at the thought of how God decided to choose me, when I see so many other people He has not yet chosen to reveal Himself to.  The title of this poem sums up the overwhelming feelings I had, as the thoughts for this poem came together.  More to come when time allows…

SCRIPTURES FOR YOU TO REFLECT UPON

“At one time we too were foolish, disobedient, deceived, and enslaved by all kinds of passions and pleasures.  We lived in malice and envy, being hated and hating one another.  But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, He saved us, not because of righteous things we have done, but because of His mercy.  He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, whom He poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that, having been justified by His grace we might become heirs having the hope of eternal life.” (Titus 3:3-7)

“Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners–of whom I am the worst.  But for that very reason I was shown mercy so that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might display His unlimited patience as an example for those who would believe on Him and receive eternal life.” (1 Timothy 1:15,16)

“We know that the law is spiritual; but I am unspiritual, sold as a slave to sin.  I do not understand what I do.  For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do.  And if I do what I do not want to do, I agree that the law is good.  As it is, it is no longer I myself who do it, but it is sin living in me.  I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my sinful nature.  For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out.  For what I do is not the good I want to do; no, the evil I do not want to do–this I keep on doing.  Now if I do what I do not want to do, it is no longer I who do it, but it is sin living in me that does it.  So I find this law at work: When I want to do good, evil is right there with me.  For in my inner being I delight in God’s law; but I see another law at work in the members of my body, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin at work within my members.  What a wretched man I am!  Who will rescue me from this body of death?  Thanks be to God-through Jesus Christ our Lord!  So then, I myself in my mind am a slave to God’s law, but in the sinful nature a slave to the law of sin.  Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of life set me free from the law of sin and death.  For what the law was powerless to do in that it was weakened by the sinful nature, God did by sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful man to be a sin offering.  And so He condemned sin in sinful man, in order that the righteous requirements of the law might be fully met in us, who do not live according to the sinful nature but according to the Spirit.  Those who live according to the sinful nature have their minds set on what that nature desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit, have their minds set on what the Spirit desires.  The mind of sinful man is death, but the mind controlled by the Spirit is life and peace; the sinful mind is hostile to God.  It does not submit to God’s law, nor can it do so.  Those controlled by the sinful nature cannot please God.  You, however, are controlled not by the sinful nature but by the the Spirit, if the Spirit of God lives in you.  And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Christ.  But if Christ is in you, your body is dead because of sin, yet your spirit is alive because of righteousness.  And if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit, who lives in you.  Therefore, brothers, we have an obligation–but it is not to the sinful nature, to live according to it.  For if you live according to the sinful nature, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live, because those who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.  For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship.  And by Him we cry,  “Abba, Father.”  The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children.  Now if we are children, then we are heirs–heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in His sufferings in order that we may also share in His glory.”            (Romans 7:14-8:17)

“The LORD will call you back as if you were a wife deserted and distressed in spirit–a wife who married young, only to be rejected,” says your God.” (Isaiah 54:6)

“This is what the LORD says: “Let not the wise man boast of his wisdom or the strong man boast of his strength or the rich man boast of his riches, but let him who boasts boast about this: that he understands and knows Me, that I am the LORD, who exercises kindness, justice, and righteousness on earth, for in these I delight,”  declares the LORD.” (Jeremiah 9:23)

“Do everything without complaining or arguing, so that you may become blameless and pure, children of God without fault in a crooked and depraved generation, in which you shine like stars in the universe as you hold out the word of life–in order that I may boast on the day of Christ that I did not run or labor for nothing.” (Philippians 2:14-16)

“May I never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified in me, and I to the world.” (Galatians 6:14)

SO UNDESERVING… SO GRATEFUL

What was it that You saw in me

That made You choose to set me free

So undeserving of the love You showed

So unable to pay the debt to sin I owed

No strength to stand against temptation

Always feeling the weight of condemnation

Attempting to do good to earn Your approval

Always failing in my attempt to find guilt’s removal

Bound by fear that caused me to lie

Creating false reasons to escape rejection, I did try

Using sinful humor to find acceptance and a friend

Sinking deeper into guilt, seeking pleasures without end

It was not because of a righteousness I had of my own

It was not because of the kindness to others I had shown

If it was because of my weakness, then for that I give You praise

My heart cries out in thankfulness, my voice in thanks I raise

If it was because I was unloved and rejected, then it was worth the pain

To now know Your love and acceptance, Your forgiveness and joy was mine to gain

If it was just because of Your grace, that You chose to save a wretch like me

Then I will boast in Christ alone, who has the power to set us free

I will never forget that glorious day

When I was reading Your Word, and in my mind You did say

Those amazing words that set me free

From sin and fear, when Your truth I did see

You gave me courage to face my fears

Hope and trust to stop many of my tears

Strength in the areas where I find myself weak

Wisdom, when Your truth to the lost I do speak

Grace to make me desire to be pleasing in your sight

Peace when I focus on Your power and Your might

Men’s words and ‘religions’ are just traps and a snare

They keep us in bondage, when Your truth is not known to share

Your mercy extended, Christ’s blood now covers me

So grateful to You I will always be
